Our program, according to school district policies, uses the following approaches to learning:
1. Learning through play is a high priority at both schools. Research has proven that children learn best through hands on activities and experiences. You can look through more of our website to get more information on learning through play.
2. Our children are tested on basic competencies in the fall and then again in the spring using district assessments. These test help us asses where your child’s language and beginning reading skills lay. We develop lesson plans that include skills such as lower and upper case letters, name writing, rhyming and beginning letter sounds.
3. When developing lesson plans we rely on “Creative Curriculum” for planning ideas. We also use the Handwriting Without Tears Program and at Suamico we use the Second Step program for guiding children’s behaviors
4. A goal is helping children feel comfortable and excited to continuing their learning in (big school) Kindergarten. We teach the children self-help skills such as dressing to go outdoors and knowing when and how to ask for assistance. We also focus on social and emotional skills including sharing, taking turns, expressing feelings and working in teams.
At Shining Stars we have a full daily schedule that varies activities from active to quiet, small group to large group and indoor to outdoor. We try to give the child the ability to choose projects and learning centers based on their interests within the framework of the lesson plan. Our goal is to help the child make good, productive learning choices within our structured environment. Our rooms are composed of learning centers:
A, Science F. Library
B. Math & Manipulative G. Sensory
C. Art H. Writing Center
D. Blocks
E. Dramatic Play
We incorporate nature and quiet soft areas along with large group areas. The room is full of children’s work and the sounds of their play. Volunteers, community members and field trips round out our curriculum by helping us understand the world we live in.
Additionally, Shining Stars in nature based. Laura, the owner, is a board member of the Wisconsin Nature Action Collaborative for Children (WiNACC). Their goal and the goal of Shining Stars is to help children learn through experiences with and in nature. Our programs spend quality time in our outdoor learning environment splashing in puddles, digging in the sand, exploring in the woods, tracking animals and their habitats, and caring for our gardens and chickens.
We look forward to serving your family. Thank you.
